Magnesium alloys are emerging as "new aluminum alloys" because of their light weight and high strength, but in general, magnesium alloy castings are relatively fragile. The result: despite its widespread use in cars, the light alloy is rarely seen in exterior decoration. Magnesium alloys have been used in the automotive industry for several years. For example, magnesium alloys can be found in car seats, door modules, center console and instrument panel brackets. However, there are no magnesium alloy parts in the visible exterior decoration.
Compared with other plastic materials commonly used in automobile interiors, magnesium alloy has its own unique advantages. For example, its mechanical properties (strength and modulus of elasticity) and high temperature resistance of metal-to-metal welding are significantly better than that of electroplated engineering plastics. Automotive components with high mechanical properties, such as sunroof handles, can also be made of magnesium alloy. In fact, these parts are very difficult to make out of engineering plastics.
The new electroplating technology of magnesium alloy is quite complicated. Liquid grease can also be removed by electroplating magnesium alloy with organic solution. The reactive treatment is carried out first. During the treatment, the interfering oxide layer on the surface of the magnesium alloy is also removed, and a thin metal base layer is formed on the surface of the magnesium alloy.
